How to Care for a Football Shirt in the UAE Heat

, by Football Kult, 3 min reading time

A good football shirt or polo should last you for years, not a season. In the UAE, though, our kit has a tougher life than most: strong sun, high humidity and sweaty five-a-side sessions all take their toll on fabric, colour and printing. The good news is that a few simple habits make a big difference. Here is how we recommend looking after your football shirts and polos.

1. Wash it soon after you play

Sweat left sitting in fabric is what causes lingering smells and yellowing, especially around the collar and underarms. If you can't wash a shirt straight away after a game, at least hang it up to air rather than leaving it balled up in a kit bag in a hot car.

2. Turn it inside out

Always turn shirts inside out before they go in the machine. This protects printed names, numbers and badges from rubbing against other clothes and the drum, and it reduces pilling on the outer face of the fabric.

3. Keep the temperature low

A cool or 30°C wash is enough for most football kit. Hot water can fade colours, shrink cotton and weaken the adhesive on heat-pressed printing. Always check the care label first, because it overrides any general advice, including ours.

4. Go gentle on detergent and skip fabric softener

Use a mild detergent and don't overload it. Avoid bleach entirely. If your shirt is made from a technical, moisture-wicking polyester, leave out the fabric softener: it can coat the fibres and reduce how well the fabric pulls sweat away from your skin.

5. Wash with similar colours

Bright reds, oranges and deep blues can bleed in the first few washes. Wash new shirts with similar colours, and keep whites separate.

6. Never tumble dry

The tumble dryer is the fastest way to crack printing and shrink a shirt. Instead, hang it on a plastic hanger or lay it flat to dry.

7. Dry it in the shade

This one matters more in Dubai than almost anywhere. Direct UAE sunlight will fade colours surprisingly quickly, so dry your kit indoors or in a shaded, well-ventilated spot. The heat means it will still dry fast.

8. Iron carefully, or not at all

Most polyester football shirts don't need ironing. If you need to remove creases from a cotton polo, iron it inside out on a medium setting, and never put the iron directly on a printed name, number or badge. Place a thin cloth over printed areas if you have to press near them.

9. Store it properly

Hang everyday shirts on a wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. For shirts you want to keep for the long term, fold them with acid-free tissue paper and store them away from sunlight and humidity. Avoid wire hangers, which can stretch the neck and shoulders over time.

Caring for your Football Kult polo

Our vintage football polos are made from premium cotton with a slim fit, so they are designed to be worn far beyond the pitch. Treat them like any good cotton polo: wash inside out on a cool cycle, reshape while damp, dry in the shade and iron inside out on medium if needed. A polo such as the Holland Oranje or the Italy Azzurri will keep its colour much longer if it stays out of direct sun while drying.

Caring for personalised shirts

If you've had a name and number added through our custom football shirt service in Dubai, the printing is the part to protect. Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash so the print can fully set, always wash inside out, and keep the iron well away from the lettering. Follow these steps and your personalised shirt should look sharp for many seasons.

Kitting out a whole team?

The same rules apply to team kits, just at a larger scale. If you're organising kits for a club, academy or company team, take a look at our team and corporate orders, and share these care tips with your players so the kit lasts the whole season.
