In the 1990 World Cup, hosted in Italy, the team featured Salvatore Schillaci and Roberto Baggio. They reached the semi-finals but were eliminated by Argentina in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Italy went on to beat England 2-1 in the third-place match, with Schillaci scoring the winning penalty to finish as the tournament's top scorer with six goals.
